What is ischemia stroke?
A stroke occurs when the blood flow in part of your brain is blocked, Just a few minutes, the starved brain cells begin to die.
Normally, the brain receives blood via two major pairs of arteries, which branch throughout brain tissue and supply your brain cells with a constant flow of oxygen, glucose and nutrients necessary for their functions.
Ischemic Stroke is an artery in your brain narrows or completely blocked preventing normal blood flow. The blockage may be caused by a blood clot, also called a thrombus which forms in an unhealthy artery in the brain. The lack of blood flow causes the tissue and the artery supplies to become starved or ischemic.
Similarly, the blockage may be due to an embolus, a blood clot that forms elsewhere in the body, travels to the brain. The embolus lodges in a narrowed artery and obstructs blood flow.
Osteoporotic collapse fracture at lumbar spine
A 84 years old lady
Suffering from Osteoporotic Collapse Fracture at L1 lumbar spine
loading to the kyphotic deformity and stress on vertebral body
2 months’ of persisting severe back pain, could not sleep well and walk without pain; This was diagnosed as Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture
Proposed treatment were Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty
- Vertebroplasty
Under the pin holes procedure the tamp is inserted through the pedicle into the vertebral body. The collapsed fracture and vertebral bodies are strengthened by acrylic cement bone shape are rebuilt with less angulation and more stronger bone - Kyphoplasty
By inserting the inflatable bone tamp through a 2-3 cm mini wound balloon in inflated, thereby compressing the cancellous bone and restoring vertebral height
Thereafter, the cavity created by balloon is filled with acrylic cement
In this case, due to the kyphotic deformity Kyphoplasty was proceeded before Vertebroplasty in order to restore the vertebral height first Under local anesthesia patient’s vertebral height was restored by the inflated balloon
- Vertebroplasty
Once acrylic cement was instillated to strengthen the vertebral body and correct its kyphotic angle the persisting severe back pain immediately vanished.
Bone shape were rebuilt with more stronger bone to prevent collapse and angulation with kyphotic changes
